Winston Riley was a Jamaican singer, songwriter and record producer who was one of the most successful reggae producers of all time. He formed the group The Techniques in 1962 and later started his own label, also called Techniques, in 1968. He produced many hits for various artists, such as Dave and Ansell Collins, General Echo, Sister Nancy, Buju Banton, Cutty Ranks, Lone Ranger, Frankie Paul, Super Cat, Red Dragon, Admiral Tibett, Gregory Isaacs, Tiger, Pliers, and more.
He is best known for creating the “Stalag” riddim, which is the most sampled reggae song of all time. The riddim was first released in 1973 as an instrumental track called “Stalag 17” and later reappeared as “Stalag 18”, “Stalag 19”, “Stalag 20” and "Ring the Alarm Quick". The riddim has been used by hundreds of artists, including Tenor Saw, Boogie Down Productions, N.W.A, RZA, Nas, Beyoncé, and Rihanna.
Riley was also influential in the development of dancehall music, producing some of the earliest and most popular slack and ragga songs, such as “Double Barrel”, “Boops”, “Ring the Alarm”, “Stamina Daddy”, and "Agony". He was known for his innovative use of keyboards, melodies, and remixes, as well as his ability to work with different styles and genres of reggae.
Riley was shot in the head at his home in Kingston on 1 November 2011 and died on 19 January 2012 after being in a coma for over two months. He was 68 years old and left behind a legacy of music that transcended boundaries and influenced generations.
